Leadership Awareness

Leadership Awareness

Adaptability is essential to success in any arena or area of your life. A powerful mind can adapt to any situation, whether directly in the moment or gradually overtime. Either way, whatever needs to be done will eventually happen, so that growth can continue to progress unhindered. What does this mean as far as leadership is concerned? In order to live a successful life, even in just one area, you need to master some level of leadership and any effective leader is capable of adapting to changes in circumstances. That being said, you must have a particular awareness not only for what is going on around you and to you, but also to what is happening because of you. This is called leadership awareness.

Who are you leading? Most importantly and undoubtedly yourself. Even if you are a Navy Seal, you must first lead yourself into a position that would even allow for you to take on the challenge of trying to become a Navy Seal in the first place. You would have had to made a decision prior to any order or command ever given to you that you were never going to quit. You would have had to accept any and all conditions that were bound to come your way. Just because you are not in command of the Seal Training program doesn’t mean you are not leading anybody, it just means you’re leading an army of one.

This idea is important because no one can make you do anything, not even with a gun pointed at your head. The gun nor the bullet inside it can make you do anything, only influence you. Therefore, the question always remains “what are you going to do next?”

5 levels of leadership

The 5 Levels of Leadership is just one of the 70 plus books that John C. Maxwell has written on leadership. It’s not even his first book, but I believe it is the foundation behind all of his books. Knowing your current leadership status is the ultimate form of leadership awareness, simply because it tells you in black and white the kind of impact you are making on other people, which you can in turn compare to the type of impact you wish to be making.

Did you know that you could be a level 1 leader to yourself? Yeah, you might look at yourself as just a position leader. Someone who is only in charge of their body because it was given to you at birth, but you may not feel like you are in charge of your own life. Is this you? Are you aware of this? What level are you in your own eyes? This is the first step to leadership awareness, as far as the five levels of leadership are concerned. The next step is finding out how other people perceive you.

Qualities of a Good Leader

  • Patient
  • Listens first

  • Teaches by example
  • Is a student of life
  • Decisive
  • Confident
  • Ambitious
  • Team player
  • Pushes people up
  • Committed
  • True to their word
  • Hard worker

Signs of a wanna-be leader

  • Hot headed
  • Barks orders
  • Cocky
  • Slave driver
  • Lazy
  • Complainer
  • Talks down to people
  • Know-it-all
  • Talks first
  • Blames others
  • Complacent
  • Credit taker
  • Dishonest
  • Do as I say, not as I do
  • Slow to action
  • Unaccountable
  • Negative

There is no such thing as a good leader and a bad leader. If you are a true leader then you are a good leader. If you are a so-called “bad leader,” then you are bad person posing as a leader. In this regard, you are not leading anyone, but merely bossing people around. And even if by some luck a wanna-be leader made it high up the chain of command, I guarantee you that they won’t be happy with their life. What’s the point of having a high leadership position if you aren’t happy?

I could have easily called this section self-awareness, but seeing as how most people are highly unself-aware, I feel that being self-aware is a natural quality of leadership. So, in my eyes if you are aware of who you are, where you are, where you are going, and what you need to do to get there, then you are by default practicing the art of leadership.

To continue being an example of proper leadership it is imperative that you continue being a student of success. There are no particular books, audios, seminars, degrees, lectures, certifications, or mentors that you must have in order to be a level five leader. The avenue in which you become educated is up to you and what your path requires, just as long as you take the necessary steps as a lifelong student of leadership.
